Today I went out briefly to run errands with My Guy. My
mission was to purchase a brighter shower curtain so that my bathroom isn’t too
dark, get a shower curtain liner, pick up a storage box for photos, and have
lunch at Panera Bread. After all was done and we were driving home, My Guy
observed someone walking on the sidewalk and commented, “He is so happy just
walking and eating his donut.” Unfortunately I missed the man because I was
driving. He continued to say, “It’s amazing how something so simple and small
can make someone so happy,” which led to a discussion of happiness.
We had a great conversation about how some of the most
seemingly insignificant things can bring so much joy and happiness to an
individual. It’s all in our expectations. He added that many times we miss
these opportunities because we look for or expect big events or planned
experiences to define our happiness, never taking the opportunity to enjoy the
small ones that we experience every single day.
We don’t know what that man’s story was, or why he was
walking and eating a donut on a main street, what his day was like, whether
someone purchased the donut for him, or if it was the first time he’d eaten all
day. All that could be seen was that he beamed with joy and was happy at that
moment. These opportunities are available to us every single day no matter what
is happening in our lives. As we continued our ride home we held hands, and
were happy J.
